Trion Knoll Dropper

High Voltage offshore wind specialists V&SH Offshore have executed the contract to install all Dropper cable and the Terminations and Testing works at the SIF yard in Rotterdam.

The scope of the work included the installation, mechanical protection, temporary and permanent mechanical termination and testing of the HV Dropper Cables in 90 Transition Pieces (TPs) for the Triton Knoll Offshore Wind Farm (TKOWF) and all associated works.

Also, the preparation of “jumper” cables for 9 locations including the packaging and delivery to the employer.

“These onshore works are the perfect example of the added value we bring to our Clients. In close cooperation with our Client, we came up with the solution of prefabrication of part of the Works onshore.”

Sustainable for future generations

The works, next to cable routing, Termination and Testing works, also included a tailor-made solution for protecting the cable during the different phases of the windfarm.

By performing these works onshore, we did not only largely reduce the safety risks offshore, but also significantly reduced offshore installation time and the associated costs for our Client.

We strongly believe in early involvement, minimising safety hazards and costs offshore. Making the renewables market even more sustainable for the future generations”

Triton Knoll Array

High Voltage offshore wind specialists V&SH Offshore has successfully executed the contract to perform all array cable Terminations and Testing work at Triton Knoll Offshore Wind Farm (TKOWF). Therewith contributing to providing clean energy to an expected minimum of 800,000 average UK households.

The scope of the work entailed the preparation, completion, termination and testing of the High Voltage and Fiber Optic connections of the 66KV Inter Array Cables in the 90 WTG structures and 2 Offshore Substations of the Triton Knoll Offshore Wind Farm (TKOWF) and all associated works. The works have taken place offshore following installation of the Inter Array Cables in 2020.

In-house Offshore Wind Specialists

V&SH has steadily been working on an extensive track record since 2011, providing High Voltage solutions at nearly all major offshore wind farms in North-West Europe. Our own in-house qualified V&SH HV-jointers are being constantly trained at our own training facilities, securing quality and Workmanship for every jobs at hand.

Both Safety and Workmanship are of utmost importance on all of our projects, and we understand this to be of even greater importance for our Clients. Therefore, constant and extensive training is one of our main priorities within our project preparation phases.

“Operating our own training facilities enables us to perform all required training sessions in-house, at any time, to the highest standards and in cooperation with our Clients, allowing us to offer our HV jointers tailormade courses and certification. Herewith securing quality and reliability that is so important while operating at the end of the construction phase of any offshore wind project”

In addition to terminations and testing, V&SH also provides services including consultancy, site inspections, pre-assembly of HV cable sets, testing, maintenance, fault finding and quick response services 24/7 worldwide.

Hohe See Wind Farm

V&SH Offshore have completed all High Voltage operations at Hohe See Wind Farm in the North Sea. V&SH’s offshore high voltage specialists were commissioned to perform the stripping, terminations and testing work at all 79 offshore wind turbines.

Design and Construction of Cable Frames

In addition, V&SH Offshore also designed and constructed cable frames to route the cables safely through the confined turbine spaces. These frames were purpose-built for a new type of cable. This in order to create less waste and provision of easy access for repairs, saving significantly in downtime.

For these operations, we deployed our own dedicated cross-functional crews. Having every required high voltage skill on hand resulted in less stand-by time for our client. We will continue to operate this way in future as well”

Prior to the installation, V&SH invested extensively in testing and preparation. The frames are lightweight and modular, making them easy to transport and assemble on location, saving costly offshore installation time.

Horns Rev 3 Wind Farm

The offshore termination and testing scope of the Horns Rev 3 wind farm was executed by V&SH Offshore. Our scope included the stripping, termination and testing works of all 49 offshore wind turbines. By means of connecting the Array cables to a Dropper cable using a straight joint.

During the execution of this scope, the client rewarded our craftsmanship with the award of the making the final connection of all the Dropper cables to the Switchboards as well. This enabled us to combine the two scopes and help reducing the number of transfers, total offshore construction time and associated costs.

Agile and flexible mechanics

After completion of the project. V&SH Offshore has performed multiple maintenance works while the wind farm was energized. The agility and flexibility of our in-house mechanics has proven to be vital in order to keep downtime to a minimum.

V&SH Offshore specialists with a Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (HUET) proved perfect for the job, being able to swiftly board a wind turbine

“Quick response is a necessity for our clients in case of an anomaly on their wind farms. With our experienced and certified HV specialists we will be able to carry out the works swiftly and reduce wind turbine downtime to a minimum.”

Onshore Preparation

By performing as much of this scope onshore, both costs and risk for our client could be minimized in comparison with execution offshore. In addition, V&SH was able to identify and solve multiple matters which could result in offshore implications due to our exceptional experience in offshore terminations

“Being able to assist our clients with our knowledge and experience, even if it outreaches our scope, is what we as V&SH Offshore are proud of.”
