My Culture
of Safety

Safety isn’t just a policy, it’s my priority. I always keep an eye on how safe we are. It’s not just about the tools or the certificates. It’s more about our mindset and our actions. Safety is in our thoughts and our daily habits.

I THINK SAFE.
I FEEL SAFE.
I WILL ACT SAFE.

My commitment:

I shall exercise my individual responsibility to ensure a safe and healthy working environment. This also means that I will be strictly sober and fit for work.

If an unsafe act and or an unsafe condition is imminent and could become a serious risk, I will use my “LICENSE TO STOP” the work activity or task. It is my right and my obligation to do so. My supervisor will be informed immediately. The work will only resume after the risk is reduced to satisfactory level.

The work place is a dynamic environment; where activities, hazards and risks keep changing during the course of day. Hence, I will stay alert to control the risks. This means that I will use safe working procedures, risk assessments, permits to work, toolbox talks and last minute risk assessments as maybe appropriate or required.

All injuries, property damages, environment pollutions, near misses, unsafe acts and unsafe conditions as well as security related issues will be reported to my supervisor, as soon as possible. Serious matters will be reported immediately. I will only operate work vehicles, with proper authorisation from my supervisor. I will ensure that my driving / operating certificate is of the correct type and remains valid. I will not operate a vehicle, if I am unwell or under the influence of alcohol or medication.

Powered tools, such as electric chain saw, pneumatic wrench or hydraulic hammer etc. all need to be handled carefully as these can cause serious injuries if used wrongly. I will not use such tools, for work that these are not designed for. If a tool is not used anymore or if I am going away from the worksite, I will always unplug it from the power source. I will keep the tools clean.

I will pause if I am unwell or become unfit for work. If the condition persist, I will inform my supervisor or a person nearby, and seek medical assistance as soon as possible. In case I am using medication which could interfere with my senses or abilities, I will inform my supervisor before starting work.

When I am in a new place of work or facing a task for which I may not have adequate work experience, I shall request for a safety induction prior to the commencement of work.

I will use and maintain my personal protective equipment (PPE) in a proper manner. I will inform my supervisor when the quality of my PPE has deteriorated or if the expiry date is about to be reached. In case of any doubt I will consult my supervisor.

I am mindful that smoking is only permitted within designated smoking areas. I am also aware that smoking is not permitted within 3m of any storage areas for gas, paint, chemicals, oil or any other flammable materials.

I will only perform hazardous works (such as working at height, hot works etc.) within designated work areas, or else with an approved permit to work in place.

Garbage and industrial waste (e.g. chemical, paint, lubricants, oil and grease) will be disposed of according to the rules at the worksite. I will not dispose these at sea, on to the ground or into drainage systems.

I will try to reduce harm to the environment by consuming less, reducing waste and preventing spills and emissions.

I will participate in emergency drills and HSE trainings which are obligatory. If unable to do this, I will seek exemption from the Responsible Manager.

Climbing the Safety Culture Ladder

There’s this key tool I use: the ‘Safety Culture Ladder’. It helps me ensure we’re always upping our safety game. I am certified for rung 3.

My Unique Approach to Safety

When I check on safety, it’s not about filling out forms. It’s about talking, and understanding how we all think and behave safely. I hold group sessions and personal discussions. It’s a chance to learn from each other and grow individually in our safety journey.
